António Guterres: ‘Peace negotiations are not possible at this time. Both Russia and Ukraine believe they can win’

Here is the El Pais interview in which he says so. He may be right, but it’s not his job to state it and thereby accept war as a priority. I am glad he lauds the Chinese initiative.

However, the UN needs – and deserves – a more dynamic leadership, one that would dare to not only distance her/himself from Russia’s invasion but would also denounce NATO’s ill-considered, provocative and unnecessary expansion and massive armament of Ukraine for years.

This has never been a war between Russia and Ukraine only. And he and his staff should look at the conflict underneath the war – and address that.
