‘Godfather of AI’ Geoffrey Hinton quits Google and warns of the dangers of misinformation

Dr Geoffrey Hinton, 75, said he quit to speak freely about the dangers of AI, and in part, regrets his contribution to the field.

This is probably the most consequential piece of world news today (May 2). I fear for AI’s (mis)use or unintended impact on the MIMAC – the Military-Industrial-Media-Academic Complex – in times when we witness rampant intellectual and ethical disarmament among human decision-makers. (And Google/Microsoft as the most dangerous corporations for our future – not his criticism of the former).

Not that AI has to be as dangerous as nuclear weapons, but I was reminded of Robert Oppenheimer’s Bhagavad-Gita statement after he had witnessed the first nuclear detonation: “‘Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds'”.
