Gaza chamber? Zionism must be replaced

Israeli bombs kill 100 Gazans in single day – Al Jazeera English Israel’s leaders seem determined to turn Gaza into what one could call a Gaza chamber. While Israel’s leaders believe they destroy the Palestinian state and people, we are also seeing the possible self-destruction of Israel. When everybody – presumably including the U.S./NATO and the EU – have abandoned Israel as a friend and ally, it may either become an extremely dangerous actor or simply fall apart. The only Palestine-Israel that can survive in my view is a democratic state with equal rights for all, not a Jewish state, not a Zionist state. Concluding question: How do we help Israel to recognise the end vision and co-operate on an alternative – becoming one partner in a larger Middle Eastern community?

Russian Attacks Change Europe’s Security Landscape – Oh, really, General Dempsey?

☮ ☮ The highest military commander in the US, Dempsey: Russian Attacks Change Europe’s Security Landscape  –  My comment today to Iran’s PressTV. This is alarming in the sense that Dempsey’s statements are extremely bellicose. His arguments are thin and imprecise. But it seems that the U.S. has now recognised that it won’t get Ukraine into NATO that easily and, […]

It’s doable: Peace Israel-Palestine

By Jan Oberg         This one has just been published as TFF PressInfo here. I argue that we need to focus on the violence on both sides rather than taking sides among the parties. The article ends with some principles about conflict understand and will be followed-up with some more concrete ideas. I sincerely believe we must try to be constructive, pro-peace and not continue to be stuck in blaming, apportioning guilt and focus only on past and present cruelty – we need, to make peace, to look into the future and what it could be like, acceptable of course to all parties. No, it is not easy – it is much easier to thrwo mud in one or the other direction and vent one’s frustrations. But I am looking for people who’d like to make an honest attempt.

Flere gange siger hun

☮ ☮ Ukraine’s President Poroshenko: The world must choose sides

☮ ☮ Ukraine’s President Poroshenko: The world must choose sides – CNN Petro Poroshenko emphasizes it’s a terrorist act beyond Ukraine, part of world terrorism (he uses the word 10 times); this is what he called it also just hours after it happened. He implicitly excludes accident or that a terrorist act was in the making but took down the wrong plane. He sees “no difference” with September 11 and virtually quotes George W. Bush on people either being with us or with the terrorists. He denies conflicts “inside the Ukrainian nation”. This is both interesting and surprising aspects of this presentation of the official Ukrainian perspective. I recommend it.

☮ ☮ And President Obama wants peace!

☮ ☮ And President Obama wants peace? – See him in this video and read the facts from CNN. In terms of total money received, Israel is the largest cumulative recipient of military assistance from the US since World War II. Between 2002 and 2011 Israel got $30 billion of US foreign aid of which nearly 75% was used to purchase U.S. defense equipment from American companies. Putin delivers military assistance to separatists in Ukraine and is accused of causing MH17’s downing. So if those who deliver weapons are guilty of how the recipients use them, this should also be President Obama’s moment of truth. He should join the international civil society and tell how he plans to stop Israel from using all the weapons his country delivers. And how bizarre: First weapons, then war, then ceasefire negotiations and then small humanitarian coins to the victims. What the hell did you expect, Mr. President, when you delivered the weapons to Israel in the first place?

Use Malaysia’s MH17 to make peace instead

TFF PressInfo, July 21, 2014 By Jan Oberg, TFF director Tragic misuse of a tragedy The government of Ukraine as well as the separatists, NATO/U.S. and very many leading Western mainstream media seem all to know who has caused the tragedy. Putin believes it was caused indirectly by the West. Given the fact that very few, if any, people or institutions canknow who did it with enough details, data and precision to accuse anyone, the MH17 tragedy has been misused to an extent that can itself only be termed tragic. The misuse is tragic because it is a catastrophe for close to 300 people, their relatives and friends. Silence – of both verbal and military weapons – and empathy would have been appropriate. Anyone pointing fingers and calling it a terrorist act at this point is irresponsibly or should present convincing evidence. Secondly, the blame game makes the necessary road to peace and security even more difficult.   An All Party Peace Process should come out of MH17 and the civil war It would have been so much more civilised to use the MH 17 tragedy to say:

☮ ☮ Mahatma Gandhi On Palestine, Written in 1938

☮ ☮ Mahatma Gandhi On Palestine, Written In 1938 Since my student years, Gandhi has been one of my inspirations, perhaps the basic one. I have studied his theories and action, I’ve been teaching Gandhi and I walked in his footsteps here and there in India in 2001. No less than 76 years ago he gave us a perspective on what happens these very days in Gaza. I thought that bringing it here would be an inspiration to your too. I’m convinced that we must distance ourselves from violence and terrorism on all sides if ever this conflict shall begin to move towards a sustainable solution. Read Gandhi here

Interview on RT in early June

In early June I was asked by Russia Today – RT – to do a half-hour conversation about militarism and peace. The only questions that were planned in advance were about the changes in Sweden’s foreign and security policy over the years which I had writen about in TFF PressInfo – here in English and here in Swedish. So it was […]

Israel launches Gaza ground attack

► ► BREAKING – Israel launches Gaza ground attack http://ow.ly/zhTQ0 22 hours ago I wrote as a comment on Israel’s idea to have a new ceasefire. My point b) turned out – tragically – to be true: ☮ ☮ Israel to temporarily halt fire in Gaza Strip Hmmmm – this comes after Netanyahu said Israel would bow to no pressure from anywhere, after Hamas said no to ceasefire, after it was stated that the bombs would fall until the rockets went silent and after Liberman attacked his boss for being too weak. Strange! Two interpretations: a) The Israeli media strategy is failing, the world is in sympathy with the Palestinians, some goodwill is needed; b) this is the step that shall lead to an escalation including a ground invasion: Look these Palestinian terrorists didn’t reach out when we told them to. Now we are going to show them an even harder lesson.

☮ ☮ Israels fredsbevægelse døde i Oslo

US ambassador to Sweden: Join NATO

This is how pressure is put on other countries and a rare glimpse by media into processes presumably meant to be semi-official and basically hidden to the public. And of course, it is up to sovereign Sweden to decide what to do – but, however, not joining NATO will have a price. See below the ambassador’s formulation and hint at Ukraine’s situation. The truth is that Sweden doesn’t need to join because it is strategically important enough where it is. Added February 18, 2016: And this is why the host nation support agreement between Sweden and NATO is so important. And should be refused mainly through broad popular debate and democratic pressure on the government. Here is a first a Google translation of the article in Svenska Dagbladet, April 28, 2014 – followed by the original text in Swedish: Monday April 28, 2014, Svenska Dagbladet ”Sweden should join NATO “ If Russia threatens Sweden , we can not count on any help from NATO or the United States. Should Sweden be defended , we should join NATO . In the midst of the Ukraine crisis , the U.S. has given this clear message to all Swedish parliamentary parties . Today there are only a realistic security actor in Europe who can provide you with a guarantee of security, says U.S. Stockholm Ambassador Mark Brzezinski in his arguments for Swedish NATO membership . “Fredsforsker” i Bent Jensens regi
