US to strike ISIL ‘sanctuaries’ in Syria I venture the following predictions: 1) This will lead to mass-killing of innocents too. 2) This will further undermine the United Nations since there is no mandate for bombing Syria. 3) It will strengthen the resolve of ISIL and other groups (see end statement). 4) This is done either without President Al-Assad’s acceptance and is thus international aggression or the Coalition has a secret agreement with the mass murderer who was, not long ago, to be thrown out – thus undermining the moral strength and principles of the West. 5) Keeping Iran out will only antagonise it further from the West (see Khamenei’s response that now Iran won’t participate). 6) This will make a peaceful restructuring and stability in the whole Middle Eastern region even more difficult and Obama/the West has no vision about it – and 7) There will be more terrorists in the future since killing terrorists does not address the root causes of the ism – terrorism. In short – a tragedy beyond words, caused to a large extent by the West itself, since March 20, 2003.
Six Steps Short of War to Beat ISIS By eminent researcher Phyllis Bennis The speech President Obama ought to have held…based on brilliant intellectual points and the logics of ethics. With that the U.S. could lead. Without it, it just can’t.
☮ ☮ Obama’s plan to stop ISIS – video of speech, about 13 min. This speech is a record low in terms of moral and intellectual analysis: What it boils down to is war – i.e. killing every single ISIS person anywhere. The war on terror has always been about killing terrorists but you can not kill an ism – terrorism. Do something about the causes that compel people to become terrorists. This speech, when implemented, will in all likelihood lead to more terrorism and hatred of the West – I mean what will frustrated Sunnis in Iraq think about Obama? Not a word about international law – but a remarkable sentence that in two weeks Obama himself will chair a meeting of the UN Security Council! What? Can any head of state do that?? Further, not a word about Washington’s long-term vision for a better Middle East – indicative of the absence of any such vision. Finally, the last 2 minutes are the most interesting: A combination of unbearable self-praise, megalomania and denial of the changing U.S. role in the changing world. If this is American leadership at its best – and that’s what the President says – the world as we know it may soon crumble.
▶ The Powers Behind The Islamic State – YouTube Nafeez Ahmed, brilliant reliable researcher/journalist gives you, in 21 min, all you basically need to know about ISIS/Islamic State and why it is the result of policies conducted by the U.S., Britain, Qatar, Saudi-Arabia. He offers some common sense proposals on how to stop it. And there is NO military solution to it, only a shift in policies based on a recognition of just how much wrong we have done. Use these types of knowledge-based sources and forget Western mainstream media.
☮ ☮ NEW TFF PressInfo: All Danish MPs now turn humanitarian aid into a military mission for Iraq Tragic. Nothing learnt from Denmark’s 4 wars since 1999. Risk of mission creep and spreading to Syria and splitting up Iraq. The Denmark I grew up in and the government commission I was a member of in the 1980s was competent and decent in comparison with this.
Do you know that 6 countries in today’s Europe have 480 nuclear weapons (beyond France) and that Germany is the largest with 150 of them? The are all United States weapons stored here through secret arrangements. This report is written by Hans Kristensen, a Dane who has studied nuclear weapons since the 1980s and is an indisputable world authority. His report is 9 years old. How many people know about this? Why is it not discussed? Why are these weapons obviously not all safe? And in these Ukraine days: How could we imagine what Russia thinks about these nukes? You may jump the technical details in the middle of this analysis but do go to the last parts where the strategic nonsense that NATO builds upon is torn apart. These are the countries that tell Iran not to get nuclear weapons – and let Israel have 200+ ! These 6 states (not including France) have more (American) nuclear power than the entire Chinese arsenal – and we are told that China is an emerging threat too. SHARE this! SEND the link to your media and politicians. Everyone can do something for peace and for public education.
Israel strikes the Islamic University in Gaza City – Al Jazeera English “This brings the death toll in Israeli offensive on Gaza, which began on July 8, to at least 1,655 Palestinians, mostly civilians. More than 8,900 others have been reported injured. On the Israeli side, 3 civilians have been killed by rockets launched from Gaza and at least 63 […]
Responsibility for wars and killing A number of Western/NATO politicians – Hillary Clinton foremost among them – and media people have recently introduced a new ethical principle in international affairs: When A delivers weapons to B, A is responsible for what B does with these weapons. The former Secretary of State and perhaps future U.S. President presents this new ethical principle here on CNN. This makes a lot of sense to me. Look at it this way: Here is a young confused boy who has little to look forward to – and less to lose – because his country is falling apart in nasty civil war. He’s been told by some commander, or by his President, that he must hate the enemy; he gets paid for killing off as many as he can. And so he does.
Israeli bombs kill 100 Gazans in single day – Al Jazeera English Israel’s leaders seem determined to turn Gaza into what one could call a Gaza chamber. While Israel’s leaders believe they destroy the Palestinian state and people, we are also seeing the possible self-destruction of Israel. When everybody – presumably including the U.S./NATO and the EU – have abandoned Israel as a friend and ally, it may either become an extremely dangerous actor or simply fall apart. The only Palestine-Israel that can survive in my view is a democratic state with equal rights for all, not a Jewish state, not a Zionist state. Concluding question: How do we help Israel to recognise the end vision and co-operate on an alternative – becoming one partner in a larger Middle Eastern community?
☮ ☮ Ukraine’s President Poroshenko: The world must choose sides – CNN Petro Poroshenko emphasizes it’s a terrorist act beyond Ukraine, part of world terrorism (he uses the word 10 times); this is what he called it also just hours after it happened. He implicitly excludes accident or that a terrorist act was in the making but took down the wrong plane. He sees “no difference” with September 11 and virtually quotes George W. Bush on people either being with us or with the terrorists. He denies conflicts “inside the Ukrainian nation”. This is both interesting and surprising aspects of this presentation of the official Ukrainian perspective. I recommend it.
☮ ☮ And President Obama wants peace? – See him in this video and read the facts from CNN. In terms of total money received, Israel is the largest cumulative recipient of military assistance from the US since World War II. Between 2002 and 2011 Israel got $30 billion of US foreign aid of which nearly 75% was used to purchase U.S. defense equipment from American companies. Putin delivers military assistance to separatists in Ukraine and is accused of causing MH17’s downing. So if those who deliver weapons are guilty of how the recipients use them, this should also be President Obama’s moment of truth. He should join the international civil society and tell how he plans to stop Israel from using all the weapons his country delivers. And how bizarre: First weapons, then war, then ceasefire negotiations and then small humanitarian coins to the victims. What the hell did you expect, Mr. President, when you delivered the weapons to Israel in the first place?
TFF PressInfo, July 21, 2014 By Jan Oberg, TFF director Tragic misuse of a tragedy The government of Ukraine as well as the separatists, NATO/U.S. and very many leading Western mainstream media seem all to know who has caused the tragedy. Putin believes it was caused indirectly by the West. Given the fact that very few, if any, people or institutions canknow who did it with enough details, data and precision to accuse anyone, the MH17 tragedy has been misused to an extent that can itself only be termed tragic. The misuse is tragic because it is a catastrophe for close to 300 people, their relatives and friends. Silence – of both verbal and military weapons – and empathy would have been appropriate. Anyone pointing fingers and calling it a terrorist act at this point is irresponsibly or should present convincing evidence. Secondly, the blame game makes the necessary road to peace and security even more difficult. An All Party Peace Process should come out of MH17 and the civil war It would have been so much more civilised to use the MH 17 tragedy to say:
☮ ☮ Mahatma Gandhi On Palestine, Written In 1938 Since my student years, Gandhi has been one of my inspirations, perhaps the basic one. I have studied his theories and action, I’ve been teaching Gandhi and I walked in his footsteps here and there in India in 2001. No less than 76 years ago he gave us a perspective on what happens these very days in Gaza. I thought that bringing it here would be an inspiration to your too. I’m convinced that we must distance ourselves from violence and terrorism on all sides if ever this conflict shall begin to move towards a sustainable solution. Read Gandhi here
☮ ☮ Some people are exceptional By Jan Oberg A short think piece on Gaza 2014 and the moral decay of the West. Written 12 days after Israel launched Operation Protective Edge, after Shejaiya and after 400 people on the Palestinian side have been killed. Go to the article on TFF’s blog.
In early June I was asked by Russia Today – RT – to do a half-hour conversation about militarism and peace. The only questions that were planned in advance were about the changes in Sweden’s foreign and security policy over the years which I had writen about in TFF PressInfo – here in English and here in Swedish. So it was […]
